In an unexpected move, the Government decided to shift the historic Amar Jawan Jyoti and merged it with the war memorial flame. This iconic monument was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi after the 1971 Liberation War Of Bangladesh. This monument stood as the living memory of all the brave Indian soldiers who were martyred in that war. This Amar Jawan Jyoti was shifted to the War Memorial on 21st of January 2022.

This move of the Central Government aggravated the congress veterans who stepped up and registered protests. Some went ahead to claim that the Jyoti has been extinguished by the dictum, to which those in defence claimed that the Jyoti is not put off, rather it is merged with the National War Memorial.

Prime Minister Modi, while referring to this said that, there was construction of many new things post independence just for a few families, to rectify this, now monuments of national importance were being built.

The shifting of the flame of Amar Jawan Jyoti and its merger with the National War Memorial was conducted in a ceremony under the supervision of Chief Of Integrated Defence Staff. A torch with the flame of Amar Jawan Jyoti, with all the military honours was taken and merged with the National War Memorial.

This monument, The National War Memorial was inaugurated in the month of February in the year 2019. This was built near India Gate to pay homage to the martyrs post independence. This monument is located at the C Hexagon near India Gate. The names of 26,000 soldiers are inscribed on it.

The importance of this monument was depicted when Prime Minister Modi, before the commencement of Republic Day Parade in 2020 paid homage to fallen soldiers at National War Memorial, against the tradition of doing the same at Amar Jawan Jyoti. The National War Memorial has now become the location for all the homage ceremonies.

This move comes as a surprise to the nation and hence is drawing the attention of the general public.
