To improve local supply amid a drop in paddy crop area in the current Kharif season, India has banned the export of broken rice and levied a 20% levy on non-Basmati rice exports save for parboiled rice. India is the world's largest rice exporter, accounting for more than 40% of worldwide rice shipments, and competes in the global market alongside Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, and Myanmar.

It is frequently used to produce feed for very young animals and pets. Furthermore, it is ideal for all sorts of animals due to its high caloric value and low fibre content. It is also utilised in the brewing business, where it is combined with barley, as well as in the manufacture of arak (aniseed alcoholic drink, distilled, colourless drink). It is a raw ingredient used to make rice flour, which is then utilised in baby food, morning cereals, rice wine, rice liqueur, sake, and packed and tinned goods.

Broken rice exports grew 42 times to 21.31 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) from April to August 2022, compared to 0.51 LMT during the same period in 2019. In 2021-22, China was the primary consumer of Indian broken rice (15.85 LMT). Broken rice is also in short supply for chicken feed and ethanol production, which formerly relied on broken rice or damaged food grains. Global demand for broken rice has increased due to a geopolitical context influencing commodity price movement. The estimated shortage in paddy land and output for the Kharif season of 2022 is 6%. Due to inadequate rainfall in various regions, rice sowing during the current Kharif season has been around 20 lakh hectares fewer than the similar amount last year. Rice output might drop by 10 million tonnes or 12 million tonnes in the worst-case scenario.
