Raising concerns on Online Gaming and Gambling. ~Preet The Karnataka High Court has ruled that substantial provisions of the Karnataka Police (Amendment) Act, 2021, prohibiting online gambling and skill-based gaming platforms, are unconstitutional. Online gambling is now in a regulatory grey area, with no comprehensive legislation addressing its legality. The modifications to the Karnataka Police Act were ruled down by the Karnataka High Court on three key grounds: violation of fundamental rights to trade and commerce (Article 19), liberty and privacy (Article 21), and speech and expression (Article 22). (Article 19). Being plainly arbitrary and unreasonable in that it failed to discriminate between two types of games, namely skill and chance games.  Instead of chance, a "game of skill" is dependent mostly on a player's mental or physical degree of proficiency. A "game of chance," on the other hand, is primarily decided by a random component of any kind. In game

India-Australia trade agreement. ~Preet. India and Australia have stated that an Interim Trade Agreement will be signed in March 2022, followed by a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) 12-18 months later.  The agreement will cover "the vast majority of areas of mutual interest" for both nations, including commodities, services, origin laws, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, and customs processes. The Supply Chain Resilience Initiative was previously initiated by India, Japan, and Australia (SCRI). Before a complete FTA (Free Trade Agreement) is signed, an interim or early harvest trade agreement is used to liberalize tariffs on the trade of particular items between two nations or trading blocs.  The government's emphasis on temporary accords might be tactical, allowing for a deal to be reached with minimal commitments and the resolution of thorny problems afterwards.  The concern is that these early harvest plans may focus on the low-hanging fruits, l

The Supreme Court to inquire into the misuse of PMLA. ~Preet The Supreme Court is looking into charges that the government and the Enforcement Directorate have been abusing the Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2002 (PMLA) (ED). Even "regular" crimes have drawn PMLA's attention, and assets of legitimate victims have been attached.  The PMLA was implemented in response to India's worldwide commitment to combat money laundering (including the Vienna Convention). Instead of being "cribbed, cabined, and confined," rights have been "cribbed, cabined, and confined."  The PMLA was enacted to combat the problem of money laundering, particularly as it related to the drugs trade. Currently, the offences included in the Act's schedule are far too broad, and in many cases have nothing to do with drugs or organised crime. Even the Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR), which is akin to the FIR, is treated as an "internal document" and is not

Quad Nations Emphasizes on the Indo-Pacific region. ~Preet The fourth meeting of the QUAD grouping's foreign ministers (India, the United States, Australia, and Japan) was recently held in Melbourne, Australia. The summit took place in the midst of rising tensions between Russia and NATO members over Ukraine, the Afghan conflict, and growing fears about China's "coercion" in the Indo-Pacific area. Quad is a group of four democracies: India, Australia, the United States, and Japan.  All four countries have the trait of being democratic, and they all embrace the shared goal of unrestricted marine trade and security. The Quad is described as a group of four democracies united by a common goal of ensuring and supporting a "free, open, and prosperous" Indo-Pacific area. Shinzo Abe, the Japanese Prime Minister, proposed the Quad concept in 2007. However, the plan was thwarted when Australia withdrew, ostensibly owing to Chinese pressure. Finally, in 2017, India, A

Lack in the supplies for police, says the Parliamentary Report.  ~Preet A report on police training, modernization, and reforms was recently submitted by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs. The study emphasises the amount of improvements that are necessary as well as the obstacles that police forces confront. The study requested that the Centre assist states and union territories on how to build a road map to ensure that women are represented in the police force at a rate of 33 percent, while also expressing concern over their underrepresentation.  Rather of converting vacant men's roles, more postings might be created to accommodate women in the police force. Increasing the proportion of women in the police force will also assist to improve the police-to-population ratio. States and union territories should allocate major, difficult tasks to women rather than minor ones. Each district should have at least one all-female police station, according to the repor

The 'loan waiver card ' , the trick to lure farmers, has been played. ~Preet In an attempt to snatch the farmers' votes, the UP Congress General Secretary, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, in the Congress election manifesto called the 'Unnati Vidhan', which was released on February 9th, 2022, in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, promised to waive the loans of the farmers within 10 days of coming into power. She also promised to bring about a scheme to bring in order the stray cattle issue.  Other than this she said to put in place a sub quota for OBC- communities and to give the position of Home Minister to a Dalit. The loan waiver promise has been the prime marketing strategy of political parties to keep farmers on their side and yet again the same trick has been played in the ongoing assembly election of Uttar Pradesh and that of other states. This might be a good method to gather votes, but most of the time these promises remains promises and are not fulfilled, but ye
